Goodbye Rats

A few weeks ago the girls decided it was time to get rid of the rats.  They found someone that wanted the them and set a date to say goodbye.  On the morning that they were supposed to be picked up I heard Alyssa shrieking that the rats had bitten a huge hole in the cage and had escaped.  At first I thought it was a joke, but soon found out she was dead serious.   How ironic, they had never escaped from their cage before but on the day they were being picked up, three of the four were nowhere to be found.

We looked around and could see that they had dug through the insulation in a corner of our unfinished basement.  Those darn rats could have been anywhere inside the walls of our house, pooping or nibbling on our wiring.  After some searching we found Kiwi and Coco in the cold storage room and caught them pretty quickly. Mango was a different story, that elusive little stinker gave us quite a challenge.

As we were leaving the cold storage I noticed a little nose sticking out of the hole in the wall.  We tried to lure her out with some food but she didn't come. When we reached in to grab her she backed herself back into the wall.  After awhile she poked her nose out of the insulation above the door to the rat room, but she shimmied back down before we could grab her.  She didn't come out again for a long time so I decided to set up our security cameras in both rooms.  They are motion activated so I would be notified if she came out of the wall.  The people who picked up the rats left with 3 instead of 4.

Late that night I was notified that Mango was out of the wall.  I woke up Alyssa and we ran in as stealthily as possible to try to catch her.  We had her in our grasp but she managed to wiggle her way free and ran back inside the wall.  After many failed attempts we went to sleep.  The next morning we were determined to catch her once and for all.  We sealed off both of the holes near the floor so it would force her to come out above the door.  After a few more attempts we finally caught the little rascal.  Since she seemed to want her freedom that is exactly what she got.  We said our goodbyes and released her to live her life in freedom.  Good luck little Mango, and enjoy your new home Goji, Kiwi and Coco.

This is where we finally caught Mang
